The news now in detail

The recent announcement by the Energy Commission regarding the approval of the Electrical Wiring Cables and Accessories Regulations (L.I.2478) by Parliament marks a significant stride.

It seeks to  enhance  safety and reliability in electrical installations across Ghana.

These regulations, slated for implementation this year, aim to uphold standards endorsed by the Ghana Standards Authority, thereby mitigating risks such as electrical fires, shocks, and equipment failures.

Mr. Oscar Amonoo-Neizer, the Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, revealed this development during the 20th Electrical Wiring Graduation Ceremony held in Accra.

Emphasizing the theme 'Ensuring the Safety of Life and Property through the Promotion of Standard Cables and Accessories,' he stressed the critical need to adhere to these standards for the protection of lives and property.

Concerns were raised about outdated electrical wiring installations in various buildings, including state-owned structures.

Mr. Amonoo-Neizer called for periodic inspections and testing, as per the Ghana Electrical Wiring Regulations 2011 (L.I. 2008), to ensure the longevity and safety of electrical wiring systems in facilities older than a decade.

Still staying on this

Prof. Alex Dodoo, Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority,  has echoed the significance of ensuring the safety of electrical cables, especially given the increasing adoption of electric vehicles and eco-friendly tools.

He highlighted the prevalence of substandard imported electrical cable brands in the Ghanaian market, pledging to collaborate with the Energy Commission to rectify this issue.

In pursuit of maintaining industry standards, Prof. Dodoo urged local manufacturers to collaborate closely with regulatory bodies.

Currently, Ghana boasts six local manufacturers of electrical cables and over 100 official importers.

The ceremony also commemorated the graduation of 195 Certified Electrical Wiring Professionals (CEWPs) in Accra.

This event underscored the ongoing commitment to promoting standardized and safe electrical wiring practices nationwide.

In International News

In 2023, Strutt & Parker's analysis showed a decrease in Scottish estates bought by institutional investors, charities, and corporate bodies.

However, demand remained strong, with 23 estates sold at an average price of £7.5 million, similar to 2022.

Individuals and families accounted for 70% of buyers, contrasting with 2022's dominance by entities.

The Scottish Government's Land Reform Bill, proposing scrutiny of larger estates, stirred interest in rural land transactions.

Despite a slight decline in gross investment due to global factors, interest in Scottish estates remains high, with opportunities for traditional buyers.

However, caution is advised in interpreting market data due to the impact of individual high-value sales.
